He married Arlene Heppner, also of Midland, March 15, 1945 and they raised four children. He worked at Dow Corning Corporation. When he retired in 1979, he and Arlene moved to Grayling, Mich. where they enjoyed gardening and traveling together. They moved to Thompson Falls, with their daughter, Linda McGraw, in 2002 and joined their three grandsons who had moved west a few years earlier. Don enjoyed going for coffee daily and chatting with friends. He also enjoyed watching Nascar races, and sitting on his porch swing watching deer.
Don is survived by his wife of 67 years, Arlene; a son Charles (Pam) Mapes of St. Ignace, Mich.; daughters, Daryl Scribner of Pipestone, Minn., and Linda McGraw of Thompson Falls; daughter-in-law, Jackie Mapes of Midland, Mich. He had 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by brothers, Douglas and Keith, both of Midland; sister, Glee Lions of Midland, and sister Mary Lewis of Coleman, Mich. He was preceded in death by son, Stephen V. Mapes; brother, Wilbur; and sisters, Ida, and Joan.
He was dearly loved and will be missed by his family. A family gathering is planned at a later time.
