Jon enlisted in the Navy in 1967, and then returned to the California Bay Area after serving four tours of duty in Vietnam.
Jon moved to Oregon in the 1970s and was a member of the Adair Volunteer Fire Department, attended college in Albany and Corvallis, Ore. and was hired as a firefighter/EMT by the Albany Fire Department where he became an EMT 3, then engineer before he retired with a back injury.
In 1978 Jon married Lesley North and they lived in Oregon for eight years and became close friends with Terry Shumaker, now living in Trout Creek. It was Terry who introduced Jon to this beautiful area of Montana.
Jon and Lesley moved to Santa Fe, N.M. in 1985 to open an art gallery with friends Gene Tobey (deceased) and Rebecca Tobey. Jon later started Ancient City Art Crating, developed innovative packaging ideas with his business partner Steve Piepmeier and enjoyed shipping art for many of the galleries in Santa Fe, the third largest art market in the country.
During this time, Jon and Lesley lived in houses that were on the market and decorated with their furniture and art. Jon also worked for Los Alamos National Laboratory for a number of years.
Jon's move to Trout Creek in 2006 fulfilled his dream to live a simpler life in the country. Volunteering for the Trout Creek Rural Fire Department was the natural thing for him to do in his community. Jon made a special friend in Chief Harold Hudson and helped Harold in the hunter education and bow hunter education programs working with children. Along his path in Trout Creek, Jon became an avid boater and fisherman, belonged to the Clark Fork Bass Anglers and enjoyed volunteering and fishing in tournaments.
Though Jon and Lesley went their separate ways as a couple a few years ago, they remained lifelong friends. Jon is also survived by nephews Timothy and Nathan North, and friends Steve Bolivar, Kitty Brown, Bob DuPont, John and Julie Harris, Barbara Heuer, Annette and Will Hobbs, Harold and Liz Hudson, Steve and Carol Hunt, Joe Keys, Fran Larsen, Steve and Marj Piepmeier, Roland Sweatman, fishing mentor JD Wood, and Rendell and Darlene Zimmerman.
A celebration of Jon's life will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the Lakeside Motel and Resort in Trout Creek.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Trout Creek Rural Fire Department Auxiliary, P.O. Box 1408, Trout Creek, MT 59874.
