Laura, one of five children, grew up in Long Island where she attended school. On September 30, 1944 she was united in marriage to Lindsey “Ray” Elder Sr. and to this union eight children were born. From 1962 to 1968 she worked as a cook in a restaurant in Ottawa, Kan. She then worked at Armales Eye Glasses from 1968 to 1974, also in Ottawa. Laura was also a homemaker and took care of her family and home. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
Laura enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, crocheting, sewing, reading Christian books and feeding her humming birds. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with all of her children.
Laura is survived by two sons, Lindsey Ray Elder Jr. of Thompson Falls and Walter Dean Elder and significant other Debra Marold of Butler, Mo.; five daughters, Alice Faye Callahan and husband Jerry of Hampton, Va., Frances Kay Pearsall and husband Irvin of Missoula, Patty Ann Sheler and husband Clifford of Ottawa, Kan., Barbara Elizabeth McDaniel and husband Roy of Milton, Fa. and Joyce Elder and significant other Ken Stouffer of Nevada, Mo.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and special grandson, Robert Callahan and granddaughter, April Kobel who were Laura’s caregivers. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Diana “Rose” Casida; two brothers, Henry Lester and Cornelius King; and two sisters, Ida Marie Speck and Alice Olafsson.
