Horsemen win big

December 7, 2017

Maybe the Plains Horsemen will be all right after all. And they just might be better than all right judging by the results last week.

One year after building a 20-4 record behind all-conference players Ryan Ovitt, Alec Cole and Aaren VonHeeder and with all three of those players now graduated and gone, the Horsemen look like they could be contenders again after routing Drummond 62-36 Friday and Valley Christian 51-23 Saturday in the Tip-Off Tournament at Frenchtown last weekend.

Now 2-0, coach Mike Cole and his Horsemen will ride into Darby Friday to take on the 1-1 Tigers in another non-conference game. Darby split contests in Frenchtown, defeating Hot Springs 46-27 Friday and losing to Philipsburg 51-47 Saturday.

Four Horsemen reached double figure scoring against Drummond as Kyle Weeks poured in 17 points, Tanner Ovitt 14, Jay VonHeeder 12 and Derick Curry 11. Orion Pry-Hyde added four points and Sinjin LaDeaux two.

Jonah Parke led Drummond with 13 points but no other Trojan player was able to score more than eight.

The issue was never in doubt in Plains’ win over Valley Christian as the Horsemen galloped out to a 12-2 lead after one quarter and extended the advantage to 31-10 by halftime.

Weeks and Curry each counted 12 points in that win, Ovitt chipped in with 11, VonHeeder 10 and LaDeaux six.

Casey Reimer scored 10 for Valley but no other Eagle was able to score more than five.
