Presidential race could be the next reality show

January 11, 2018

On Sunday at the Golden Globes, Oprah Winfrey gave a proud speech while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement. Immediately, the Internet was abuzz about whether or not Oprah was laying the foundation for a run for presidency in 2020.

As we get older, it seems time goes faster. It’s hard to believe that President Trump is already reaching the end of his first year in office. And who will run in 2020 is the talk of the town.

Ronald Reagan was president of the Screen Actors Guild before he became governor of California, and then President of the United States. Celebrities running for office isn’t anything new. And in the race for President of the United States, people such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dennis Rodman and Kid Rock have expressed interest in the past.

The days of politicians becoming celebrities because they are politicians might be coming to an end, with the tides changing to celebrities becoming politicians because they are celebrities.

And maybe that’s not such a bad thing. Celebrities definitely have the power of influence. Both Trump and Winfrey captured audiences of millions of people with their media empires. If they can turn that into changing the political world, more power to them.

So will Winfrey and Trump meet at the polls in 2020? Who knows. Maybe Bill Gates or Kim Kardashian will edge them out in the primaries.

And if it comes down to a “too close to call” situation, then I guess we might just have to put them on an episode of “Shark Tank” and let Mr. Wonderful and Mark Cuban choose the winner in 2020.
