Lady Devils split with Tigers, Vikings

The Noxon Lady Red Devils are in it for the long haul, and played two more District 14C conference games last week, defeating the Lady Tigers 34-29 in St. Regis Friday, and falling to Charlo 49-31 in Noxon Saturday.

Up next for coach Bart Haflich and his Noxon girls are the Arlee Scarlets in Noxon Thursday and the Hot Springs Savage Heat in Hot Springs Saturday.

Haflich said foul troubles caught up with the Lady Devils against Charlo. When there are only seven players total on your roster, foul troubles take on added importance.

“That’s the first time this season where early foul trouble really affected us,” he said. “We tried to weather the storm but weren’t able to in the end.”

The Devils fell behind early (16-7 after one quarter, 34-17 after two) and never were able to fully recover. “We kept chipping away at their lead,” Haflich said, “but couldn’t quite get it all back.”

Kristina Brown led the Lady Devils against Charlo with 11 points, Delaney Weltz and Anna Kaiser added seven each and Cory Brodmerkle six.

Kaitlin Cox led a balanced Charlo scoring attack with 11 points.

Against St. Regis, Weltz led the winners with 13 points, Brodmerkle scored 11, Brown five, Kaiser four and Phalyn Fickas one.

Kylee Thompson led St. Regis with 12 points and Justice Tate added nine.

Haflich and his Lady Devils look forward to the rest of the now-short season with optimism.

“We keep grinding away, trying to get better every night,” he said, “and look forward to our games this week.”
