More candidates enter local races

The deadline to enter county and state races was Monday, and additional candidates have entered the contests.

The District 1 Sanders County Commissioner seat is open this year, and Carol Brooker of Plains has filed for re-election. Paul Fielder has also filed for the position. Fielder, of Thompson Falls, is the husband of Montana senator Jennifer Fielder, a Republican who represents Senate District 7.

For the newly combined position of Sanders County Clerk and Recorder / County Treasurer / Superintendent of Schools, current clerk and recorder Nichol Scribner was the only person to file.

The other position that the Sanders County Commissioners voted to combine this year is Sheriff / Coroner. Tom Rummel, who is finishing up his third term, has filed for re-election, along with Justin Ryan of Plains and Darlene Lee of Thompson Falls. The top two candidates from the June 5 primary will meet in the general election on Nov. 6.

Current County Attorney Bob Zimmerman also has filed for re-election in Sanders County. Joining him in that race is Trout Creek attorney Naomi Leisz.

For Justice of the Peace, incumbent Doug Dryden and Mark French, both of Plains, will meet in the election.

Judge Deborah “Kim” Christopher has filed for re-election as District Court Judge for District 20, Dept. 2. Also filing is Ben Anciaux and Ashley Morigeau of Polson.

In House District 13, incumbent Bob Brown of Thompson Falls will face off against Democrats Gerald Cuvillier of Trout Creek and Chris Gross of Thompson Falls.

On the east end of Sanders County in House District 14, incumbent Denley Loge of St. Regis will meet fellow Republican James Mortenson of Paradise and Diane Magone of Superior, a Democrat.
