EQUINE COURT - Noxon students and teachers traded sneakers for cowboy boots at the annual donkey basketball fundraiser.

The return of donkey basketball at Noxon High School last Friday was met with enthusiasm. No galloping was allowed, no hooves with metal shoes that would require resurfacing for the regular basketball season. No pooping either, although the trainers came equipped with shovels if the equines had accidents.

DONKEY ART - Student artists had a chance to win gift certificates to Big Sky Pantry at the donkey basketball event. Winners were (from left) Riley Sather, Renzy Marshal and Kenya Brubaker.

The donkeys kept a slow, steady pace though the players urged them to pick it up. It wasn't boring and it was amazing that anyone made a basket. Despite the challenges between riders (some fell off trying to dislodge the basketball from their rival's grip), neither the students or their teachers were hurt (except maybe, their pride).

The opposing teams provided great excitement for each other and their audience, but were pretty much equally matched, judging from the fact that they had to play two overtimes which ended in a third. But the donkeys' owner from Washington called a halt because the donkeys were tired and sweaty, and they had a long ride back. Everyone left laughing and planning to mark their calendars so they wouldn't miss the next go around.
