Trotters rally past Copperheads

What a big game to win, and what a great way to do it.

The Plains-Hot Springs Trotters won a key Western B-C softball contest in Plains Thursday, scoring two two-out runs on a double by Natalee Deschamps in the bottom of the extra inning eighth to escape the dangerous Anaconda Lady Copperheads and walk off the Trotters’ home field with a 7-5 victory.

Kassidy Kinzie went the distance in picking up the pitching win, scattering eight hits allowed across the eight innings, Deschamps finished the game with two hits and drove in three runs, and Stacy Gray, McKenzie Elliott and Jessica Thompson had a run batted in each.

The Trotters finished with 11 hits, also including two from Kinzie (one of which was a double) and Sydney Jackson, and one each from Gray, Sage Jackson, Dakota Butcher, Kenzie Angle and Elliott.

To say coach Michele Bangen was happy with the win is an understatement.

“That was a huge win for us,” she said, “and it was great the way we did it. We hope to use this game as something we can build on the rest of the way.”

The Trotters have six important Western B-C contests on tap in the next week, hosting Eureka for a doubleheader Saturday, visiting Mission for a doubleheader with Mission-Arlee-Charlo Tuesday, and finally, hosting Troy in yet another doubleheader next Thursday.

In other action last week, the Trotters defeated Manhattan Christian 14-2 in a makeup game played in Missoula Friday, and then returned home to Plains Saturday to sweep a pair from Deer Lodge, beating the Wardens 6-4 and 8-4.

Kinzie again was the winning pitcher in both games, although Butcher threw some good innings as well. The team was not at full strength as Thompson was competing in track and field and Brooklyn Stafford and Emma Morgan were at the state musical festival.

“It was good for us to prove we can play even when we don’t have everyone,” Bangen said. “That should give us a good mental boost the rest of the way, knowing that we can compete even without all our players.”

Sage Jackson and Butcher hit triples in the first game with Deer Lodge and Kelsey Standeford, Gray and Sydney Jackson each added doubles. Butcher and Standeford drove in two runs apiece and Gray and Sage Jackson one each.

Elliott had four hits, including a double in the second game, and Sydney Jackson and Butcher two each. Sage Jackson knocked in two runs and Kinzie, Butcher and Angle one apiece.
