Walk, walk, walk... hit, hit, hit

Productive offensive efforts lead to first Hawk win

It was walk, walk, walk and then hit, hit, hit for the Lady Hawk softball team as Thompson Falls softball scored its first win of the season in Mission Friday, taking down Deer Lodge 19-4.

Coach Jared Koskela said his team came out ready to play against Deer Lodge and were able to pull away for the win as a happy result. The game was a makeup contest after the teams’ scheduled meeting earlier this season was cancelled due to weather.

Koskela said Deer Lodge had trouble with their first pitcher and then had more with the next one. “Their first pitcher was having trouble throwing strikes and then they put another one in that we managed to hit against pretty well,” he said. “It went from walk, walk, walk to hit, hit, hit – our bats really came alive in that game.”

It seemed like all the Lady Hawks got in on the hitting fun.

Maya Stiles laced out three hits, knocked in two runs and scored three herself, Haley Morgan had two hits, including a double, droved in two runs and scored three, pitcher Kelsey Frank added a hit, two runs batted in and three runs scored, Belle Cooper had two hits, including another double and drove in three runs, Jody Detlaff had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run, Riley Wilson two hits, two runs and another three RBIs, and Faith Frields two hits, a run and an RBI.

In other action last week, the Hawks lost twice but played well in both games at Troy Thursday, falling to the Lady Trojans 16-13 and 15-9. Koskela was pleased with how his girls competed in Troy.

“We were definitely able to get some hits off them, we matched them pretty well at the plate,” he said. “The difference was they were able to extend some innings on their side, a couple of tough outs kind of got us in the end.”

Cooper smacked another double in the first game, Detlaff and Frank had two hits apiece and Stiles and Wilson one each.

Frank, Frields and Detlaff had two runs batted in apiece and Wilson another.

Cooper doubled up on doubles in the second game, hitting two, and Morgan and Frank added one each. Morgan and Frields had two hits apiece and Stiles added another. Detlaff wound up with a team-high two RBIs and Morgan, Cooper and Wilson one each.

Paige Chapel and Izzy Ramirez drove in three runs apiece in the first game for Troy, and Cammi Finley and Montana Rice two each.

Rice knocked in five runs in the second game, Ramirez three and Kaylee Tunison two.

The Lady Hawks have four more games on tap this week heading into the stretch run of the season. The Hawks will host Missoula Loyola Thursday at TFHS with the action beginning at 4 p.m. and will play Manhattan in Drummond Friday.

The Lady Hawks will conclude regular season play taking on Drummond in Mission next Tuesday.
