Our Viewpoint

Visitors, remember to wave at everyone

Sanders County is home to many treasures. Not only is the area beautiful, but so are the residents. Perhaps it is because the locals have a certain respect for how things operate in these parts, and respect the old west “rules of etiquette.”

As tourist season is upon us, we tend to notice how the rest of the world behaves. If you are a tourist to the area, here are a few tips as you mingle amongst the locals.

Although the county is home to 1,733,000 acres, it seems that there are places where you just cannot get away from others. Please remember to be respectful of one another’s space and peace and quiet. There is plenty of space to share. Being respectful, keeping pets controlled and noise levels down are always appreciated.

Summer months mean lots of pedestrians are out and about making up for the long, dark, cold, winter months. Give bicyclists, runners and walkers a break. Stop and allow them to cross the street before you. Slow down when passing them on the highway. In doing so, a wave and smile is always required.

Recreation is the hottest thing going in Sanders County. Camping, fishing, hiking, boating and other outdoor activities are all a blast. It is really disappointing to see these precious areas littered with trash. If you have not heard it before, or need a quick reminder, “Pack-it-in, Pack-it-out!” You will be doing the entire world a favor.

Last, but not least, respect wildlife. There may be times when you are travelling down the highway clipping along at a fair pace. You may not have the option to stop before connecting with a deer, elk, turkey, or some other creature. If you receive enough warning, please stop, wait, be patient and allow the animal to cross. This is also applicable in Thompson Falls, where the geese literally use crosswalks to cross the road.

Enjoy your stay in Sanders County!
