  • Dragon roams Hot Springs

    Ed Moreth|Feb 15, 2024

A 32-foot dragon was spotted in Hot Springs last week, but all it did was stroll down Main Street and look pretty. It was part of the town's 13th Annual Lunar New Year Parade and this was the "Year of the Dragon." The colorful mythical creature took six people to operate. Hot Springs resident Mark Cometti was the head, followed in the dragon body by Julie Rae and Brad Peterson of Missoula, Laurie Gibson and Jim Beyer, both of Hot Springs, and Ian Smith of Libby. "I was just here on vacation and...

    Annie Wooden|Feb 15, 2024

A Trout Creek man died over the weekend after falling through the ice in the Trout Creek area. On Thursday, February 8, the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) received a report of a missing person after Jim Chambers did not return home from ice fishing. Chambers’ belongings were located on and around the ice, and his vehicle was still parked in the Marten Creek area just outside of Trout Creek. Sheriff Shawn Fielders told The Ledger that Chambers had been fishing on the Clark Fork River down from the the Marten Creek boat launch. He sai...

  • TF council hears zoning concerns

    Annie Wooden|Feb 15, 2024

More than 50 people showed up to the Thompson Falls City Council meeting on Monday, which was preceded by the much anticipated zoning committee meeting. The council has told community members since last fall that the city’s zoning ordinance would need to be revised, and Monday’s committee meeting was the first step in that process. Former mayor and current zoning committee member Mark Sheets addressed the crowd, saying that additional committee meetings would be scheduled and detailing changes. Among those, Sheets said the ordinance needs to...

  • Stylist designs T. Falls salon

    Shannon Brown|Feb 15, 2024

The Blue Slide Parlor hair salon opened recently by owner Ai Moore. Ai and her husband Brian built the salon on their property, where Brian grew up. "Ai designed the building herself," Brian said. She wanted an A frame due to the amount of snow they get and for the looks. Ai also decorated the interior and helped build the cabinets. The walls are white with macrame hangings that Ai made. Dark blue is found throughout the furniture and artwork. "I like blue and I watched videos on how to do...

  • Our Viewpoint: All on the same team

    Annie Wooden|Feb 15, 2024

In between the Mr. Swift show and the Usher concert on Sunday, I had the chance to review some fifth-grade Social Studies. My young friend was studying the Declaration of Independence, and she was surprised at how much I remembered and knew about it (she was also impressed that I knew the names of Christopher Columbus's three ships). I was a little surprised at how much I remembered as well. I was also surprised at how much still applies today. Life was different in the 18th century, no one can deny that, but I'm pretty sure most Americans...

  • Wait before forming opinion

    Feb 15, 2024

I was disappointed to see the letter opposing a four-day school schedule last week. It followed the formation of a calendar committee at the school, which happens before every school calendar is submitted to the board. No plan was presented, for either a four- or five-day schedule, so having an opinion was premature. Once the proposed calendar, or calendar options, become(s) available, I'll look it over, and maybe ask a few questions, before forming an opinion. I'd encourage other concerned people to do the same. Pat Crowder, Thompson...

  • Montana Viewpoint: Acting like a nation

    Jim Elliott|Feb 15, 2024

I am reading a history of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and their role together in the creation of America. It depresses me greatly. It depresses me because of the stark contrast with the caliber of people we now elect to office. The Senate recently created a bi-partisan bill to address the border issue. It was spearheaded by one of its most conservative members, James Lankford of Oklahoma. It addressed issues of great concern to Republicans and did not address issues of great concern...

It was the first regular Plains Town Council meeting for the two new members - J.D. Crabb and Lana Dicken - but they got right to work and actively participated with agenda items. The council tabled four items at last Monday's regular meeting, but passed the Freedom of Information Act Resolution and the Voter Review Resolution. • Richard Jack Wilkinson

    Feb 15, 2024

On February 2, 2024, Richard Jack Wilkinson, surrounded by family, rejoined his loved ones in heaven. He was born to George and Flore, in 1930 in Missoula, Montana. 94 years young, Richard learned hard work early on "working the family dairy farm and ranch up Lolo Creek," while his older brother and uncles were called up for the war. He always remembered the pain endured during those years, as a society, and personally, from bouncing on that iron tractor seat alone, for many a hay field mile!... Full story

  • The Average Gamer

    Marshall Barker|Feb 15, 2024

The year 2023 was a great year to be a gamer, and no matter what type of games you are into, there really was something for everyone. And 2024 is shaping up to be another fantastic year for gamers. Every year, we get new entries into established franchises such as Call of Duty, Madden, or the globally popular Fifa. With all of these huge titles, it can be easy to miss out on some great games, and that's why I made this list to showcase three games that I am personally looking forward to in 2024. The first game I want to talk about is Pacific...

  • Trotters fall to Mission at home

    Ed Moreth|Feb 15, 2024

It was not a good day for the Plains Trotters Saturday when both the varsity and junior varsity squads were both hammered by Mission in the last regular game of the season. The JV squad of Mike Tatum and Charity Jermyn was defeated by the Lady Bulldogs 54-28. For Brooks Sanford's varsity Trotters, it was worse - they were thoroughly beaten by 62 points, 80-18. Sanford knew the Lady Bulldogs were going to be a tough opponent because a week prior they were ranked sixth in the state. Mission went...
