Could this be deja vu?

Déjà vu all over again?

It's tournament time for the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks and it has a familiar feel to it for those who remember last year.

The Lady Hawks went into the Western B tourney last fall as the No. 4 seed from District 7B and ended up winning second place in the tournament. Coach Sandra Kazmierczak and her Lady Hawks then went on to Bozeman and ended up winning the State B third place trophy, which represents the best finish ever by a Sanders County team at a State volleyball tournament.

Kazmierczak would like nothing better than a repeat performance of that 2016 feat by her 2017 Lady Hawks.

"We are in the same position as last year, the No. 4 seed out of our district," she said. "It's a tournament, so everyone is 0-0 and we have the same opportunity as everyone else.

"If we come out strong and stay positive, we are capable of anything," she continued. "Maybe it could be déjà vu and we could make it happen again."

One difference between this year's Lady Hawks and last year's is experience level. The 2016 Hawks were a veteran crew that was derailed in the late regular season by suspensions but got everyone back for the divisional tournament. This year's club is mostly underclassmen, talented underclassmen but underclassmen nonetheless.

"We are pretty young overall but I have really enjoyed this group," Kazmierczak said of her latest Lady Hawks. "They have positive attitudes and came to practice every day eager to learn, and you can't ask for more than that."

The Hawks will open the Western B in Eureka playing Florence at 2 p.m. In the other tournament openers, Eureka takes on Loyola at 10 a.m., Deer Lodge will face Troy at noon and Bigfork will play Anaconda at 4 p.m.

The Hawks completed regular season play in their annual Pink match against Troy Friday at TFHS.

The Lady Hawks played well at times but Troy senior Aurora Becquart sparked the Lady Trojans at key times with effective serving and efficient play at the net, hitting four service aces and knocking down 10 kills to lead her team to the win.

On the other side of the net, Falls senior Lexy VanElwyk led the Lady Hawks on senior night, flooring 12 kills and blocking two shots.

Brooke Bowlin added eight kills and Jody Detlaff six, and Elsie Brown and Belle Cooper two blocks apiece.

Riley Wilson contributed 29 assists, 17 digs and an ace and Maya Stiles 14 digs and another ace.

Annie Day passed out 28 assists for Troy and Kaitlyn Downey hit 10 digs.

The top two teams from the Western B in Eureka move on to the State B tourney, part of the Montana All-Class tournament in Bozeman Nov. 9-11.
