Book and bake sale boosts library coffers

BOOKS AND BAKED GOODS were the bread and butter of the fundraiser for the Thompson Falls Public Library. Library director Lynne Kersten said this year's sale was the best yet.

It is not uncommon for businesses to open their doors to the public during the Christmas on Main Street event in Thompson Falls, but Thompson Falls Public Library had their doors open for the seasonal hubbub two days prior, as well.

The reason for the early open-door policy was to draw library and reading supporters through the municipality's threshold for their annual holiday fundraiser. The fundraiser works in the form of a book and bake sale, as librarians have sifted through surplus books and put them on display for purchase at 41 per paperback, or $2 for hardcovers – beating out the cover prices used by large book retailers.

Also on the table were homemade gifts and goodies available for purchase. All proceeds from both books and baked goods went to the library's everyday and extra functions. Children's reading time and scheduled activities always need extra funding (as well as volunteers), and other services provided by the library need continued funding, as cuts are continually being made at the state and federal level.

Lynne Kersten has been library director since 2009, and said this has been the best Christmas bake sale to date, "We had a lot of traffic through here and were able to make a lot of sales. The totals aren't counted yet, but I'm guessing we raised about $1,000 in book sales – that doesn't include money from the bake sale end of things."
