Woman sentenced to treatment for drug problem

A woman got an early Christmas present in court Tuesday as County Attorney Robert Zimmerman recommended a lighter sentence for a probation violation.

Mariah McMillan faced a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and up to $50,000 in fines. In 20th District Judicial Court Tuesday, McMillan was offered a two year deferred sentences with the condition that she get treatment.

“This is a drug problem,” Zimmerman said. “She either gets a handle on it or not.”

To that, McMillan responded that she is “ready to take a step forward, not back.”

Also in court Tuesday, Judge Kim Christopher imposed a 2-year deferred sentence for Deobrah Meyer, who was charged with assaulting a police officer after an incident in the courtroom earlier this year.

Koby Ramsey received a 3-year deferred sentence on a criminal endangemernt charge. Judge Christopher said that Ramsey was getting “a significant opportunity” from the state. Ramsey was charged with firing a gun at an unoccupied car outside the Timberline Apartments in Hot Springs on Sept. 27, 2017.

Making his first appearance in court Tuesday, David Hartman entered not guilty pleas to six counts of violation of a protection order stemming from incidents in October of this year.

Justin Lovell also entered a not guilty plea to a felony assault with a weapon charge. Documents allege that Lovell hit a man on the head with a pistol on Nov. 13 at a residence on Woodland Street in Thompson Falls.

Steven Mikkelson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday to six charges. Law enforcement initially attempted to stop Mikkelson for speeding on Highway 28 between Plains and Hot Springs. When he refused to stop, charging documents allege he crashed into a creek bed. Mikkelson is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, criminal endangerment, driving while license is suspended, failure to carry proof of insurance, open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, and speeding.

Judge Christopher denied release or a reduction in bond for Robert Peltier, who is facing charges stemming from a traffic stop in June, 2015. A 911 call was received from Town Pump in Thompson Falls on June 22, 2015, regarding a possible drunk driver.

Peltier, who is currently on probation, is charged with fourth or subsequent DUI, driving while license is suspended and habitual traffic offender with a motor vehicle. He also is charged with criminal possession of dangerous drugs after charging documents allege officers found marijuana in Peltier’s wallet during his arrest.
