County grapplers wrap up 2017

Will compete in Ronan Duals to open up 2018 schedule

Local prep wrestling teams completed the 2017 portion of the season’s mat schedule competing in matches and mixers last week.

The Thompson Falls Blue Hawks defeated visiting Mission-Charlo 42-21 in a dual match Tuesday, the Hawks, Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen, the Arlee Warriors and the Florence Falcons wrestled off in a mixer match Thursday, and both Sanders County squads and Arlee then competed in the round-robin style Mission Mountain Classic hosted by Mission-Charlo Saturday.

Kaleb Frank (120 pounds), Sam Ostwald (160), Austin Cooper (205) and heavyweight Seth Alarcon all won matches by pin in the dual match with Mission-Charlo to spur the Hawks to the victory Tuesday.

At Florence, Fran won one match by fall and another by technical fall, Lucas Anderson won a match by pin at 132 pounds, Ostwald won and lost matches by pin at 160, and Alarcon pinned both of his opponents at heavyweight.

Nathan Ostwald (126) and Dane Chojnacky (152) also wrestled matches in Florence but many of the Blue Hawks sat out some or all of last week’s action In St. Ignatius with illness or injury.

For Plains-Hot Springs and coach Jeff Kujala, freshman Peter Carey won and lost a match by pin at 120, Conrad Vanderwall won a decision at 126, Kenzie Angle and Josiah Vanderwall both wrestled matches at 132, Jesse Uski and Austin Stafford competed at 138 and 145, and Luke Lile at 160.

Seth Yother won one match and lost another at heavyweight.

In St. Ignatius Saturday for the Mission Mountain Classic, several wrestlers from Thompson Falls and Plains-Hot Springs had good mat days.

For the Hawks, Garrett Jones won three matches by pin, two at 113 and the other at 120, Anderson wrestled at 132 and 138, Chojnacky at 152, Sam Ostwald at 160, Dakota Irvine at 170 and 2015, Cooper at 205 and heavyweight, and Alarcon at heavyweight.

Again, several of coach Ian Taylor’s Blue Hawk grapplers sat out the action in St. Ignatius.

For P-HS, Stafford won all three of his matches in the Mission Mountain Classic by pin in less than two minutes each (at 145 and 152), Josiah Vanderwall and Daniel Uli won three matches apiece, two by pin and one by decision, and Lile won both of his matches at 160 by pin.

Carey split matches at 113 and 120, Conrad Vanderwall won two matches at 120, Angle wrestled at 132, Uski at 138 and 145, Robert Mather split matches at 152.

Thompson Falls and Plains-Hot Springs return to the mats Jan. 5-6 in the Ronan Duals team tournament.
