Heat boys playing numbers game

LOOKING TO SCORE - Plains' Kyle Weeks goes up for a shot as Noxon's Owen Fisher defends in Noxon Jan. 13

There are a few things outside of the Hot Springs boys basketball team's control. Things like the number of players they have and whether they will be affected by injuries and/or foul problems in any game.

When you only have six players to begin with and are right on the cutting edge of being able to play or not, one injury or illness has the potential to severely hamper a team's ability to simply play games.

Coach Ricky DePoe and his gang of six Hot Springs Savage Heat are looking at just such a situation right now. "Luke Waterbury is pretty banged up and we don't know if he will be able to play this week or not," DePoe said Monday. "We are trying to bring up a few eighth graders to help us out but are not sure if we will be able to do that."

The Heat have two home non-conference games on tap this week, hosting Victor Thursday and Valley Christian Saturday. "These are two teams we should be able to play with," DePoe said. "This is our chance, these net three weeks, to end the regular season on a positive note."

Still six-strong last week, the Heat boys lost to Arlee 65-14 in Arlee Thursday and 57-40 to Two Eagle River in Hot Springs Friday.

Against unbeaten, No. 1 ranked Arlee, Waterbury, Tyler Carr and Brandon Knudsen scored four points each, and Sean Fisher and Justin Salmi added one each.

Versus Two Eagle, Carr scored 22 points, Salmi nine, Kawika Ilac four, Fisher three and Waterbury two.

Brendon McDonald also scored 22 points for Two Eagle, and Brandon Larios and Dom Finley 12 apiece.
