Lady Hawks find offense in high-scoring game with Anaconda

FRESHMAN FAITH FRIELDS tests the defense of an Anaconda player at TFHS Saturday.

Offense was the name of the game Saturday when the Anaconda Lady Copperheads played the Lady Hawks at TFHS and, in the end, the Sydnie Peterson-led Copperheads had enough of the stuff to get by the Hawks 89-68 Saturday.

Led by freshmen Megan Baxter and Jody Detlaff, who scored 25 and 16 points each, respectively, the Lady Hawks never lost contact with Anaconda, but could not quite keep up the torrid pace set by the hot-shooting Copperheads.

A senior, Peterson went off for a game-high 34 points to lead the visitors to the win. It seemed like every time the Hawks would draw close, Peterson would nail a 3-pointer or score a deuce off a nice move to the hoop to keep the 'Heads ahead.

"There was a lot of offense going in both directions, it was pretty fast-paced," Lady Hawk coach Doree Thilmony said. "But I can see our confidence growing with each game. It's easy to forget that some of our kids were playing eighth grade basketball just last year, so it is encouraging to see the strides they are making now."

Two of those former eighth graders had a huge impact on Saturday's game. In addition to all the points she scored, Baxter also pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds, grabbed two steals and passed out two assists, while Detlaff added seven boards, three steals and three assists to her stat line.

Maya Stiles added 13 points, three rebounds and three steals, and Sarah Detlaff two rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Also part of the Lady Hawks' youth movement, freshmen Faith Frields and Riley Wilson scored four and two points each, respectively.

Sophomore Belle Cooper, normally a prime time player for the Hawks, sat out Saturday's game sick.

Peterson's 34 points led Anaconda, Logan Stetzner added 16 and Johannah Forsberg 12.

The Lady Hawks have one game this week, hosting Eureka as part of a boy-girl District 7B doubleheader at TFHS Saturday.

Thilmony hopes the Hawks continue their high-scoring ways while making moves to slow down the other teams more. "We are confident in our ability to score, but we do need to play a little better defense, too," she said. "We look forward to our game with Eureka where we can start working on that."
