Hawks eye big, bad Bigfork

February 8, 2018

They are the big, bad Bigfork Vikings, and the equally big, bad Bigfork Vals.

One of the best boy-girl basketball shows in Montana, Bigfork’s powerful teams will await Thompson Falls in Bigfork for a District 7B doubleheader Saturday.

And both the Hawk boys and the Lady Hawks will have challenging games on tap once they get there.

The Bigfork boys are currently 15-0 and the top-ranked Class B team in Montana while the Vals are 14-1 and ranked No. 3 among all girl B teams in the state. Clearly, coach Jake Mickelson’s Hawk boys and coach Doree Thilmony’s Lady Hawks will have their work cut out once game times arrive in Bigfork.

“Bigfork is a very good team, no doubt about that,” Mickelson said. “But we look forward to the challenge. We have a couple of players that just became varsity-eligible last week, and it will be interesting to see how much they can help us out this time.”

Even without those players, the Hawks put a scare in the Vikings earlier this season in Thompson Falls, and actually led that game after one quarter before falling back.

“That is probably one of the few times this season that Bigfork actually trailed in a game,” Mickelson said. “We would like to see if we can build on that and make it a game the whole way.”

The Hawk boys and Lady Hawks warmed up for their Bigfork trip by hosting Eureka in another 7B boy-girl doubleheader in Thompson Falls Saturday.

The Hawk boys won their encounter with the Lincoln County Lions 58-31, while the Lady Hawks fell 61-44 to the Lady Lions.

Danny Hoisington scored 15 points to lead the Hawk boys, Payton Frields added 10, Dylan Beckman and Jake Long eight apiece, Michael Johnson and Bennett King four each, Grant Lundberg three, and Nate Thibeault, Kade Pardee and Ryan Schraeder two apiece.

“We had a lot of fun with that game, got everyone in for some minutes,” Mickelson said. “And it sure helps to have some more bodies to throw in there.”

Colten Cooper led Eureka with 12 points and Alex Lowe added eight.

Coach Doree Thilmony’s Lady Hawks played well in their game with Eureka, but a 20-8 win of the fourth quarter by the Lions finally put the game away. Eureka led only 44-36 heading into the fourth.

It was a good effort by the Lady Hawks, especially when the fact that the Lady Lions were voted in as one of the top 10 B teams in the state last week is considered. The 10-5 Lions were ranked No. 9 in the poll.

Megan Baxter led the Lady Hawks with 15 points, Haley Morgan and Jody Detlaff chipped in with seven apiece, Sarah Detlaff six, Maya Stiles five and Riley Wilson four.

Sienna Utter bucketed 24 points to lead Eureka, Erynn Their added 12 and Maggie Graves 10.
