Hawk golfers ready for action

RETURNING ALL-STATE PLAYERS Dylan Beckman (left) and Elsie Brown, both seniors, are back to lead the Blue Hawk golf team.

Weather always seems to play a role in the start of the high school golf season each spring. This year is no exception. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawks were set to start their season Saturday at the Hamilton Golf Club, but weather delayed the tournament. Instead, the Blue Hawks will begin play Tuesday, April 3, at Hamilton.

Coaches Mike Bates and Gary Thompson said it's always something at the start of the golf season in western Montana, whether it be rain and flooding or snow still on many of the holes at River's Bend Golf Course in Thompson Falls. The latter is the case this year. While the team has been able to hit off the driving range for a few weeks, many of the holes at River's Bend are still unplayable due to multiple inches of snow.

Coach Bates said the goal is always the same for the Blue Hawks, to prepare for tournaments and look forward to the divisional meet, which this year will be May 8 at Eagle Bend in Bigfork. The state tournament is scheduled for May 14-16 in Shepherd.

The Blue Hawks have 11 players this year, eight boys and three girls. Seniors Dylan Beckman and Elsie Brown are back for the Hawks, both all-state athletes in the 2017 season. Bates said that Beckman is looking for a state title this year, and Brown is back as a strong leader for the girls.

Also competing for the Blue Hawk girls are Madison McKenzie, a junior, and freshman Megan Baxter. For the boys, seniors Kole Stone and Michael Johnson join sophomores Ethan Brown and Kaden Sparks, and freshmen Nathan Ostwald, Kade Pardee and Roman Sparks.

The Blue Hawks will play 10 tournaments this year, including as hosts of the Thompson Falls Invitational at River's Bend on Saturday, April 21.
