Kids can fish for fun at free events

The annual kids fishing day at Triangle Pond near Noxon is set for Saturday, June 2. The event is open to children ages 5 to 16 and is hosted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP), with help from the U.S. Forest Service and Avista. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with fishing from 9 a.m. to noon. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories, and each child registered will be entered in a grand-prize drawing for fishing gear.

Kids without fishing gear will be outfitted with a rod/reel combo, and participants with their own fishing gear can select a new lure. No fishing license is needed for the event, but participants do need a chaperone.

Local businesses and organizations including Avista, Blackfoot, Cabinet Ridge Riders, Clark Fork Bass Anglers, First Security Bank and Whitefish Credit Union sponsor the event.

The event will include hot dogs for participants and chaperones. For information on the kids fishing day, contact Marc Terrazas at 827-9205.

An event also is planned for Saturday, June 23, at Thompson Falls State Park pond. This event is hosted by FWP and the Thompson Falls-Plains Ranger District. Because the State Park pond is smaller than Triangle Pond, the kids’ fishing event in Thompson Falls will be split by age group. Children age 5-9 will be able to fish 9-11 a.m., with children age 10-14 fishing from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Registration is 8-9 a.m., and children 10-14 may register from 9-11:15 a.m. as well. Children in the younger age group must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Organizers for the Thompson Falls event said a limited number of rods and reels will be loaned to anglers who don’t have them, but children are encouraged to bring their own gear if possible. Also, the focus in Thompson Falls will be on fishing, so families will need to bring food and water. Organizers also remind families to bring eye protection and sunscreen.

Prizes will be awarded to anglers in each age group in Thompson Falls. For information on the Thompson Falls kids fishing day, contact Jason Blakney at 827-9282, Ryan Kreiner at 827-9320, or Scott Palmer at 826-4319.
