McGOWAN’S LOT SITE FOR PLAINS POST OFFICE

The Post Office Department has accepted an assignable land option for the site of a proposed new Post Office building at Plains. The property is owned by the McGowan Commercial Co. and is located between the McGowan building and the First National Bank on the north side of Railroad St.

The proposed building will contain 2,538 square feet of interior floor space with a 216-square feet of parking and maneuvering area.

The McGowan Commercial Co. is expected to bid on the building. The lot at present is vacant.

The Post Office building mentioned above is now Gambles Hardware. In 1968 the Post Office was located in half of the building that is now Plains Drug. The first Gambles store in Plains was established by Fred Amundson in 1939 and was in half of the building that now houses Colleen’s Country Store. In 1993 Ed and Fern Diehl bought the Gambles Store from Alvin Amundson.
