Schools replacing aging fire alarms

October 4, 2018

Safety is a priority at Thompson Falls Schools, Superintendent Bill Cain reported at the board meeting Monday evening. With that, the administration is looking at the buildings. “There are some things that are outdated,” Cain said, including the fire alarm systems at both the high school and K-8 campuses.

The phone system at the school also serves as a paging system in an emergency, Cain said, noting that sometimes that paging may not be loud enough to be heard over alarms at the campuses. The school is in the process of installing new fire alarm systems that would allow for better communication at the campuses.

Cain also noted that the high school system currently includes different components, and the first step for the new system was having an electrician in to provide new wiring specifically for the alarm system. Cain said he hopes the projects will be completed soon.

Cain reported that the project to replace the water meter at the junior high should be completed this week. He said the project, which decreases the size of the line going to the junior high, will save the school district money.

Also at the meeting Monday, the board voted to accept GEAR UP grant funding. GEAR UP coordinator Penny Beckman reported that the cycle for the grant is seven year, and the new cycle begins this year. The program provides funding for programs and opportunities that increase students’ college and career readiness.

“It’s an incredible program,” board member John Wilson said, noting that his daughter Haley (now a college sophomore) was the first class to be included in GEAR UP programs.

Athletic director Jake Mickelson stated that the annual Blue Hawk athletic fundraiser will be Saturday, Nov. 17. A meeting for anyone interested in helping with the event is set for Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. in the high school library.
