Local youths got a shot to test their aim Sunday at the Thompson Falls Trap Club. The Clark Fork Valley Elks Lodge presented its second triathlon event. A dozen kids joined the Elks to learn the safety and fundamentals of trap shooting.

Elks member Don Manning gave a very informative class on the history, safety and fundamentals of trap shooting. Shotguns go back as far as the early 1800's. There are a few different kinds of shotguns that are used within the sport of trap shooting. Manning showed the parts of the shotgun shell, for those that reload their shells; and the participants had the chance to shoot either a 12- or 20-gauge shotgun.

The kids were divided into three groups. The youth shot more 50 rounds over the course of the afternoon.

Elks member Sandi Torres said it was great to see the excitement in the youths' faces as they got their first birds. As the second group came up for their turn, the routine repeated itself. As the groups were taking their turns, refreshments were offered to all youth, parents and helpers.
