Elks sponsor 2018 Hoop Shoot
Local winners move on to next level of competition

Competition ran high at the Elks National Hoop Shoot on Nov. 11. The Hoop Shoot was held at the Thompson Falls High School gym and hosted 17 contestants, ages 8-13, from all over Sanders County and the surrounding areas. Thompson Falls wrestling coach, Mike Thilmony hosted the Hoop Shoot and outlined the rules and schedule before the competition began. Thilmony also started with the Pledge of Allegiance and honored all veterans attending the Hoop Shoot with recognition. A moment of silence was observed for long time Elks Member and Hoop Shoot volunteer Darrell Grimm who recently passed away. The Clark Fork Valley Elks Lodge sponsors the Hoop Shoot and has had members volunteer their time to help the event run smoothly along with other members of the community.
The Hoop Shoot consisted of three age divisions who each shot a total of 25 shots from the free throw line. The winners of the Hoop Shoot at the school level will have the chance to compete at the district, state, and regional stages of the competition ending up at the National Finals in Chicago, Ill. in April. The six contestants named National Champions will also have their names permanently inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
In the girl's division the winners of the 8 and 9 age group were Hailey Lowe, of Thompson Falls, in first and Ava Lawyer, of Plains, in second. The 10 and 11 age group winners were, Gabi Hannum, of Thompson Falls, in first and Callie Cano of Noxon in second. For the 12 and 13 age group the winners were Avery Burgess, of Noxon, in first and Olivia Fitchett, of Thompson Falls, in second.
The boy's division winners in the 8 and 9 age group were Jay Beahan, of Trout Creek in first place and Cooper Meredith, of Plains, in second place. The 10 and 11 age group winners were Carson Toivenon, of Superior, in first place and Braedon Ferris of Thompson Falls in second. In the 12 and 13 age group Conor Toivenon, of Superior, took first place and Aiden Currie of Noxon took second.
