Trotters start to finish

Blow past Mountain Cats 55-37 in Tip-Off tourney

FRENCHTOWN – When they started to finish, the Trotters had found the way their new coach was wanting them to play.

The Plains Trotters swept a pair of games in the Western C Tip-Off tournament in Frenchtown last week, nudging by Drummond 22-18 Friday and running past Clark Fork 55-37 Saturday. The 2-0 District 14C Trotters will continue going against 13C teams this week, hosting Darby Saturday in their only scheduled action of the week.

Coach Eddie Fultz liked the way his Trotters played in scrapping past the Mountain Cats Saturday after the way the Plains girls had struggled against the Lady Trojans Friday. He said the Trotters, perhaps suffering some first-game jitters against Drummond missed numerous wide-open shots, including a few layups in that game.

“We finally started to finish like I want us to in the game with Clark Fork,” Fultz said. “We were getting to the rim, getting good looks and knocking shots down.”

The Trotters were running and gunning from the start against Clark Fork, building a lead of 17-9 after one quarter and extending that advantage to 33-17 by halftime. After the Cats closed to within 37-29 heading into the fourth, the Trotters finished the game off with an 18-8 run in the final eight minutes to win going away.

Senior Rachel Huenink and junior Kylee Altmiller did the most scoring damage for the Trotters on the inside, with each dropping in 16 points, mostly on close-range shots. Fultz thinks his girls will reach their full hoops potential when they start finding their shooting range from the outside.

“When the shooting comes along, we will be that much tougher,” he said. “It was good to see us having some fun with it though.”

Haley Josephson kicked in with 12 more points, Natalee Deschamps scored five, Miera Loberg and Emma Morgan two apiece and Kassidy Kinzie and Mariah Smith one each.

Madison Mask poured in a game-high 17 points to pace Clark Fork and Sophia Krutilla and Izzy Pereira added five each.

As fast-paced as the game with Clark Fork was, the game with Drummond was a slow-paced slugfest. “I think Drummond only took like six shots from the field the entire first half,” Fultz said. “We were playing good defense and getting shots but weren’t able to get them to fall.”

Individual scoring was not available from the Drummond game.
