Comebacks lead to county wins

It was a tale two big comebacks at TFHS Thursday night, with the hometown Lady Hawks rallying to win over the Trotters in the first game and the Plains Horsemen coming back to prevail over the Blue Hawk boys in the second.

In the girls' game, the Lady Hawks trailed the Trotters 28-23 going into the fourth quarter, but outscored their Plains rivals 24-14 down the stretch to win 47-41. Jody Detlaff netted 11 of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter and Megan Baxter, who totaled 14, scored six in the fourth, including four of four free throws in the closing seconds.

Maya Stiles added seven for the Lady Hawks, Faith Frields three and Elli Pardee and Caity Alexander two each. Kylee Altmiller led Plains with 11 points, Kassidy Kinzie added 10, Rachel Huenink nine, Natalee Deschamps five and Haley Josephson, Mariah Smith and Miera Loberg two apiece.

With the boys, the Horsemen trailed the Hawks through most of the game and still were behind 34-27 after three quarters, but exploded to a 23-3 win of the fourth period to win 51-37. Senior center Derick Curry put in 11 of his game-high 21 in the fourth and senior running mate Matt McCracken added six of his 12 points in the final eight minutes to spur the Horsemen comeback.

Jake Weyers contributed seven more points to the Horsemen's total, Esvin Reyes six and Treydon Brouillete four. Grant Lundberg led the Hawks with 18 points, Ryan Schraeder scored eight, Trey Fisher and Nathan Schraeder four apiece and Ethan Brown three.

In other action last week, the Thompson Falls boys and girls swept a doubleheader from the Trojans in Troy Friday, and the Trotters and Horsemen fell to their counterparts from Arlee in Plains Tuesday, Dec. 18.

At Troy, the Hawks boys won 53-37 and the Lady Hawks triumphed 42-35.

Lundberg again scored 18 points to lead the Hawk boys in Troy, Nathan Schraeder added nine, and Brown and Jaden Isaac seven each. Fisher cleared seven rebounds to lead the Hawks on the boards.

Detlaff scored 14 more points to again lead Lady Hawk scoring, Baxter added 10, Stiles seven, Riley Wilson five, and Pardee, Sarah Detlaff and Frields two apiece.

At Plains Dec. 6, the Arlee boys held off a determined Horsemen squad 75-66, and the Arlee Scarlets got the better of the Trotters 68-43.

Curry led the Horsemen versus the defending State C champion Warriors with 15 points, Brouillette added 12, McCracken and Weyers 11 each, Reyes 10 and Nathan McNulty seven.

Greg Whitesell led Arlee with a game-high 32 points, Isaac Fisher scored 18 and Darshan Bolen 10.

In the girls' game, Alyssia Vanderburg led the winners with 23 points, Emily Fiddler tuned in with 14 more, Louetta Conko-Camel added nine and Nellie Desjarlais eight.

Altmiller canned 12 points to pace the Trotters, Kinzie chipped in with 10, Huenink and Deschamps seven each, Josephson four, Smith two and Emma Morgan one.

All four county teams are now off the court until 2019. The Hawk boys will resume season play hosting Loyola and the Lady Hawks will be in Missoula to play Loyola Jan. 3.

The Trotters and Horsemen will open play in 2019 with a boy-girl doubleheader at St. Regis Jan. 3.
