Wrestling vocation isn't an easy vacation

BLUE HAWK GRAPPLER Roman Sparks and his Thompson Falls teammates will return to mat action in 2019 on Jan. 4 at the Western Montana Duals in Ronan. Plains-Hot Springs grapplers will also compete in that meet.

Consider the sport of wrestling a working-man's vocation; and the holidays are never a vacation for athletes trying to maintain their edge and hold their weight for the second part of the season.

Coach Ian Taylor's Blue Hawk grapplers were out on the road putting in the work right before the holiday break last week, visiting Florence for a quadrangular mixer match there Tuesday and then joining up with several other local squads in St. Ignatius Saturday for the Mission Mountain Classic.

The Classic is an informal tournament where no team scores are kept and individual champions are not determined. The Hawks were able to get several quality matches in at Mission.

Trae Thilmony and Roman Sparks each won matches at 120 pounds, Thilmony by pin and Sparks by decision, Shane Reishus went 1-1 at 126, Lucas Anderson 1-2 at 145, Dane Chojnacky 1-2 at 160, Dakota Irvne 1-1 at 182 and 1-0 at 205, and Seth Alarcon 2-0 at 285.

At the mixer in Florence, Thilmony and Sparks each won two matches by pin, Anderson went 1-1, Chojnacky 2-0, Irvine 1-1 and Alarcon 1-1.

The Hawks will return to action following the holidays at the Western Montana Duals in Ronan Jan. 4-5.
