Hawks to host Vikes in season finale

February 14, 2019

It was a tough matchup on their home court for the Blue Hawk basketball team last week as the boys fell 78-50 to Mission. “We ran into a buzzsaw with them,” Hawk Coach Jake Mickelson said. “They were mature and had a bunch of seniors.” He added that his team hadn’t seen that kind of pressure from any competition all season. “We have young guards who are going to learn from that.”

The Hawks will get their chance to redeem themselves at the divisional tournament Feb. 21-23 in Ronan, as Mickelson thinks they will face a rematch with Mission in the first round. But first, the Blue Hawks will face the Bigfork Vikings at home Saturday.

“We’re going to treat this like a conference championship,” Mickelson said. “You have the top two teams in district 7B. Bigfork is a very good team and we’re excited to have them up here for the seniors and hopefully have a good showing.”

Mickelson said that Bigfork is a big physical team, and that his Hawks will work on rebounding ahead of the matchup with the Vikings. “If we know that going in, we have a chance to work on one of our weaknesses against their strengths.”

The Blue Hawk coach knows his team can compete with other teams. He stressed that they have to play well defensively and hold teams to 40 or 50 points in order to compete. He said that Bigfork may overlook the Hawks. “They probably just want to get out of here healthy ahead of the divisional tournament. It would be a chance for us to win. We just need to be consistent with how intentionally we play defense. If we’re consistent, we’re hard to score against.”

Grant Lundberg led the Hawks against Mission with 12 points, Nathan Schraeder scored 10, Ryan Schraeder, Ethan Brown and Nate Wilhite had six each, Riley Riffle added four points and Justin Morgan and Cody Burk scored three apiece.

The Hawks will celebrate senior night when they host Bigfork on Saturday.
