Plains students, alumni battle on the ball fields

The current Plains High School students pitted their skills against past graduates in the Plains Days alumni sporting events on May 31.

Flag football kicked off the evening with a popular turnout. The game was played in two 20-minute halves with a running clock.

The alumni team relied on a few substitutions from the current students to even out the team numbers. Admission to the game was $2 with the proceeds going to the Plains Mentor Program. There were also alumni t-shirts available for $15 that granted admission to all of the evenings sporting events.

In the first minute of play, the alumni traveled downfield for a quick touchdown. The current students answered fast with a touchdown after only a couple plays. The intensity kept up in the game until the last seconds with a score tied 58-58 with 54 seconds left. The last possession of the alumni was the push they needed to score a touchdown and win the game 64-58.

Spectators could send in texts with which player they thought should receive the MVP award. Current Plains High School senior Orion Pry-Hyde showed his skills running the ball and scoring his fair share of touchdowns, earning himself the most votes and a commemorative MVP plaque.

Starting right after the football game was the alumni softball game. The teams played four innings of underhand softball. Both teams had a good turnout of guys and girls showing up to play. To help even things up, the guys had to bat opposite of how they normally bat; a left-handed batter had to bat right-handed and vice versa. Plains Alum, Jessica Thompson, hit a homerun while at bat, boosting the intensity of the game.  Dakota and Izzy Butcher each showed how they earned their spots on the current softball team with strong hits, sending teammates home to score. There were hardly any hits that didn’t clear the infield, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats.

The team scores were close together during each of the innings, coming down to the very last at-bat of the alumni. Plains alum, Dave Thompson, hit a homerun at the bottom of the 4th to squeak past the current students and win the game 11-10. After calculating the votes that the spectators had sent in, Dakota Butcher was awarded the MVP plaque.

Closing out the evening was the alumni basketball game, drawing an equally full crowd and player turnout. The teams played four 8-minute quarters in the Plains High School gym. After the first quarter the score was tied 15-15. Any shots made by female players counted as double. The second quarter stayed tight, ending with the alumni at 25 and the current students at 27. The alumni seemed to be pulling away at the end of the third quarter leading the current students 48-41. It all came down to an intense fourth quarter, where both the alumni and current students rallied scoring a combined total of 45 points to boost the scores, alumni 76 and the current students 58. Earning the MVP plaque with the most votes was freshman, Tyson Brouillette, whose ball handling and quick thinking worked well in the point guard position and help the current students keep the pressure on the alumni.

The last alumni event to be held was the golf tournament at the Plains Golf Course. The tournament was a four-man scramble and each team paid an $200 entry fee. Any player who had purchased a Plains High School alumni t-shirt qualified for an extra mulligan. The tournament also featured individual hole contests. Dusty Burgess won the longest drive and Dallas Burgess won long put. First place and a cash prize of $300 went to The Ranch Club team of Dallas Burgess, Dusty Burgess, Brian Green and Tanner Columbo.
