MERCANTILE COMPANY GOPHER CONTEST OVER

Boys turn in about 2000 tails

The gopher contest, sponsored by the Thompson Falls Mercantile Company closed this week and the boys in the contest turned in about 2000 tails. Ray Austin won the first prize, a fishing pole and reel valued at $8.50 with 922 gopher tails. Billy Eplin was second with 411. Fred Turk, third.

Each of the boys, aside from the grand prize received about a dollars worth of fishing tackle for their efforts. They were all very much enthused over the hunt and hope that another will be put on next spring.

The Thompson Falls Mercantile Company was located on the corner of Main Street and Broad Street..

$25,000 ROCK DISPLAYED HERE

Bill Maney almost caused a stampeded in town Friday when he appeared on the street and exhibited a piece of gold ore which would assay about $25,000 per ton and it is possible that it would yield $50,000 per ton. Years have passed since the old prospector has dumped his poke filled with gold like this upon the bar in Thompson Falls and called for rotgut whiskey. If Bill will just tell us where he made his find, we are sure there will be another gold rush to the new “diggins’.”

MERCANTILE COMPANY PUTS ON NEW DELIVERY TRUCK

A long felt want by the Thompson Falls Mercantile Company has been realized during the past week, that of their own delivery service. For many years the E. Preston Livery company have made deliveries for the Mercantile twice a day, but business has become such that the customer demands more attention and a delivery of their own has been established to meet this want. The new delivery is a closed Graham truck.

The Preston Livery company was located where St. William’s Catholic Church is, thus the name, Preston Avenue.

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR SANDERS COUNTY ROAD

Sam Orino of Spokane was the low bidder on the proposed section of three and a half miles of the Clark’s Fork highway, west of Noxon, which will open up the north side of the road and eventually provide an all year route thru to Spokane.

The new contract eliminates two bridges and gives the Clark’s Fork route a south exposure to provide an all-winter route. It will be 22 feet wide and surfaced with crushed rock. The project is to be completed early next summer.

COUNTY COMMUNITY FAIRS UNDER WAY IN FULL SWING

Plans are progressing nicely for the various fairs to be held this fall. Three community fairs are being planned, one at Heron, one at Trout Creek and one at Lonepine. These fairs are held just prior to the Sanders County fair at Plains, September 12-13-14. Be thinking about your exhibits now and be getting them in shape so as to make the best possible display this fall.
