Human rights vigil held in TF

LEND AN EAR - Members of the community gathered on the courthouse grass to express opinions and talk about the current situation on the U.S. southern border.

Members of the Sanders County Human Rights (SCHR) group gathered on the grass in front of the courthouse last Friday for a candlelight vigil to open discussion about the current situation on the U.S. southern border. The meeting was open to the public and offered a platform to voice a wide variety of opinions for those in attendance.

The theme of the July 12 meeting was the immigrant detention centers and the conditions that they are in. The large influx of migrants seeking asylum and the limited spaces for them to go has made the detention centers become overcrowded and has a large effect on living conditions and health for immigrants of all ages but especially children, SCHR organizer Sarah Cooper said at the meeting.

The gathering was sponsored by Lights for Liberty, an organization dedicated to protecting the human rights for all. The organization sponsored gatherings across the country, bringing thousands of people together.

The talking points for Friday's meeting included immigrant children being separated from their families and the overcrowding of the detention centers. The SCHR encouraged attendees to contact Montana legislators to have their voices heard.

"It was a very nice gathering," said Sarah Cooper with SCHR. "I hope that our group will continue to grow, and more people will join the conversations." Cooper was a driving force in forming the SCHR and establishing their presence in the community.

The SCHR has been established for two years but has just recently formalized. The group offers a chance for Sanders County residents to voice their opinions and hear from others about all topics regarding human rights domestically and around the world.

The SCHR is a non-partisan and non-sectarian organization. There will be a BBQ potluck at 5:30 p.m. on August 15 starting at Rose Park in Thompson Falls. Those who would like to attend can bring personal care items, diapers/wipes or household items to donate.
