Impeachment circus

October 10, 2019

As a buddy of mine used to say as we watched the lunacy around us every day, “The hits just keep on coming!” That sort of lunacy is happening again in Washington, D.C., and as usual the Democrats are leading the charge. Some friends were encouraging me to write about the proposed impeachment hearings the Democrats are pushing. I considered an in-depth discussion but quickly realized that it just wasn’t possible in such a brief format. There are just too many moving parts.

As I see it, this all comes down to one primary issue: Democrats are accusing President Trump of using his power and influence to convince the new Ukrainian Prime Minister to look into possible corruption on the part of a political rival (Joe Biden) and election tampering in 2016. I know that’s a very simplistic explanation, but my initial thought was, “so what?” It seems to me that everyone should be applauding any effort to uncover corruption and election tampering. For me, all issues always come down to this one question: What is the truth of the matter? In my mind, if the Ukrainians have credible evidence regarding corruption on Biden’s part and/or election tampering in 2016, we should know about that and investigate! I don’t care where the information comes from if it’s credible.

The search for the truth is why I supported the Mueller investigation from the outset. My thought at the time was, conduct the investigation and determine if there was or was not collusion on President Trump’s part. I never thought there was, but still… let’s out the truth. Then, if the investigation revealed collusion, respond accordingly with a prosecution. If the investigation determined there was no evidence of collusion, I thought we could then put the allegations behind us and move on. I was wrong about the “move on” part and that’s why we’re having impeachment discussions now. As a hypothetical question, does anyone truly believe that Democrats would ignore or reject evidence against President Trump because the source was Russian, for example? Pretty glaring hypocrisy in my view.

When forming my arguments/opinions, I always try to look at things from the opposite point of view. When I did that in this instance, I realized that this impeachment push makes absolutely perfect sense for the Washington Democrats. In fact, they almost have to push for impeachment. After all, what else do they have? The Mueller investigation didn’t work out the way they had hoped, so they lost that potential weapon. There’s a pretty significant investigation going on to determine the circumstances surrounding the FISA warrant authorizing surveillance of President Trump’s campaign. I predict some key heads will roll and many high-level Democrats will be implicated when that investigation is completed.

As a party, the Democrats have no viable election platform from which to campaign. Look at their candidates. What are they running on? Free Medicare for all (including illegal immigrants)? Open borders? The Green New Deal? Free college? The list goes on but none of their campaign promises are actually achievable. I believe Washington Democrats are delusional, but they’re certainly not stupid. They know they have to do whatever they can to discredit President Trump if they’re to have even a glimmer of hope in the 2020 election. They simply can’t compete against accomplishments like President Trump’s strong economy or job growth to name only a few. It’s an old tactic, but the Democrats need some smoke and mirrors trickery to hide behind. They’re throwing as much crap as they can against the wall, hoping that some sticks.

Consider too all that is at stake in the 2020 election. The president will quite likely be filling one, if not two, seats on the Supreme Court. I think that one fact is particularly critical to the Democratic party. One or two appointments by a conservative president would change the Supreme Court for decades. There’s no doubt in my mind that there are already democratic committees evaluating potential Supreme Court nominees and determining how best to attack them. We all remember what they did to Justice Kavanaugh (there’s even a push by Democrats to impeach him too!). The next appointee (if President Trump is making the nomination as I expect) will go through hell during confirmation hearings. I predict that the Democrats will really go to the gutter for the next one or two appointees. Any bettors out there?

This impeachment push is like manna from heaven to a guy like me. I embrace the effort and actually encourage it. Why? Because it’s strengthening President Trump’s re-election campaign. The actions of the D.C. Democrats are angering their party members. Has anyone heard of any recent legislation in the areas of immigration, health care, infrastructure or the national debt? I know a number of moderate Democrats who are fed up with the antics of their party leaders. The party is so horribly fragmented because of members on the extreme left, and their socialist views, that they may never recover. Voters from all parties are asking the same question: What might get accomplished if Democratic leadership put as much effort into governing as they do in trying to undermine President Trump at every turn?
