H-Men seek homecoming revenge

How about a little revenge, served up homecoming style?

Coach Eddie Fultz and his Plains Horsemen (2-3 in league play and overall) will host the winless Victor Pirates (0-5, 0-6) in Western 8-Man conference football action under the lights in Plains Friday, and Fultz is hoping for a little homecoming-type revenge.

Fultz is glad that it will be the Horsemen’s homecoming game this time around. The memory of a 44-34 loss to these same Victor Pirates, in that school’s homecoming last year, remains burned into his memory.

“They beat us last year and we just didn’t play that well at their place,” he said. “I knew we could have performed better in that game and remember it being a pretty disappointing loss. It would be nice to get a little revenge for that game, even if it is a year later.”

The Horsemen lost 66-18 to Thompson Falls in Plains last Friday, and Victor lost 52-0 to Seeley-Swan in Victor.

The Horsemen kept pace with the Hawks early but the Thompson Falls offense overpowered the Plains D in the long run.

“There were three key plays, a few breaks early on that went Thompson Falls’ way,” Fultz said. “I am not saying we could have won, but if those breaks would have went our way, it could have been a tighter game.”

After Hawk quarterback Trey Fisher galloped 65 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage (and Roman Sparks added the two-point run for an 8-0 Falls lead), the Horsemen put together a nice drive in response, marching down the field behind the running of Treydon Brouillette, Esvin Reyes and Gavin Regalado.

With 9:30 left in the first period, Reyes cashed in the six points on a 10-yard touchdown run. Reyes then added the two-point conversion run, but it was negated by a holding penalty, leaving the score at 8-6 Thompson Falls. That was key play No. 1.

Key play No. 2 came on Thompson Falls’ next possession where a blown coverage in the secondary wound up resulting in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Fisher to Derek Andersen as the Hawks increased the lead to 14-6.

A few minutes later, the Horsemen’s third bad break of the night, a fumble, led to a 20-yard touchdown run by Hawk Nate Wilhite. After Fisher passed to Justin Miller for the two-point conversion the Hawks now led 22-6.

Not ready to cede the game to the Hawks just yet, the Horsemen side scored another TD almost immediately in response, on an electrifying 61-yard run down the left sideline by Regalado, but the Hawks went on to score 31 points in the second quarter to exert full control of the proceedings.

“They kind of wore us down,” Fultz said. “We had kids going both ways while they had enough depth to be able to platoon linemen, and it’s hard to answer that.”

Nathan McNulty scored Plains’ final touchdown on a 70-some yard kickoff return in the second half.
