Hawks hold off Lady Vikes

October 24, 2019

Call it a nice kind of surprise.

Facing off with Class C foe Charlo in Thompson Falls last Thursday, coach Sandra Kazmierczak and the Lady Hawks did not know anything about coach Rhondell Volinkaty and her upstart Lady Vikings, who have been the team to beat in District 14C so far this season.

By the time the teams had played two sets – with the Hawks winning the first 25-21 and losing the second 25-8 – Kazmierczak realized what her Hawks were up against.

“We were surprised, very impressed with this team,” coach K said. “They play very good team volleyball. There were some excellent rallies in the match, some of the best we have had all season.”

Realizing the gravitas of the situation after the Vikings defeated them so handily in the second set, the Hawks put together some quality play of their own to surge past the visitors from Charlo 25-13, 25-12 in the last two sets to claim the match victory.

Scarlette Schwindt rose above the crowd to blast 15 kills and block a shot, in addition to hitting two service aces and six digs, Jody Detlaff killed it 10 times, blocked four shots and came up with nine digs, Brooke Bowlin bashed another 10 kills, Belle Cooper was good for five Ks, five stuff blocks and five digs, Elli Pardee threw in four kills, two blocks and eight digs, and setter Riley Wilson dished out 32 assists and blocked three shots.

Connor Fryberger directed the Charlo attack with 22 assists, Carlee Fryberger hit 16 digs, Kira McPhail had eight kills and six blocks and Bella Hawk served up three aces.

The match loss was reportedly Charlo’s first of the season and leaves the Vikings with a 12-1 record. The Hawks improved to 11-3 with the hard-earned win.

In other net action last week, the Hawks throttled District 7B foe Mission 25-19, 25-7, 25-22 in Mission last Tuesday (Oct. 15).

Detlaff floored nine kills and three blocks to lead the Hawks at the net, in addition to hitting three aces, Cooper crushed eight kills and an ace, Bowlin six kills and an ace, Schwindt four Ks, a block and eight digs, Pardee hit an ace, a block and 10 assists, and Wilson whomped two kills and finished with 24 set assists.

With the tournament season only two weeks away, the Hawks will complete regular season action this week, visiting Troy Thursday and returning home to host Bigfork in the season finale Saturday.

Kazmierczak said that the Bigfork match will be senior night for several of her players. In addition, it will be Hawaiian night at TFHS, a tradition that the Lady Hawks started many years ago.

Students and fans are encouraged to don summer wear and join in on the fun in Thompson Falls’ last home appearance of the year.
