Vohs guiding Lady Devils this season

December 12, 2019

They are young but they are growing up as they play their way through the season.

The very young Noxon Lady Red Devils, playing without any seniors for new coach Cortney Vohs, opened the hoop season in the Western C Tip-Off tournament in Ronan last week, falling to Darby 44-39 Friday before rebounding to top Victor 52-19 Saturday.

Now 1-1 in non-conference play, the Devils’ next scheduled game is another non-conference tilt at Clark Fork, Idaho Dec. 17.

When reached by email early this week, Vohs said this year’s youthful team – comprised of three juniors, four sophomores, three freshmen and notably, no seniors– will only get better with time.

“We are a young team and this is a rebuilding year,” she wrote, “so I really don’t know what to expect just yet.”

Chelsea Vohs, Izzy Lampshire and Angel Hammell are the juniors out for Lady Devil hoops, Vanessa Horner, Jaedyn Murray, Arianna Wood and Gabby Stough are the sophomores, and Avery Burgess, Emily Brown and Aubrey Erwin are the freshmen.

Kaela Burgess is Noxon’s junior varsity coach this season.

Although only freshmen, Burgess and Brown were on Noxon’s high school team as eighth graders last winter and are a little ahead of the game for their age.

Burgess was more than a little ahead of everyone else last week, pouring in 28 points in the loss to Darby and counting 13 more in the win over Victor, leaving her with a 20.5 points per game average in the young season.

“Avery did have a great weekend,” Vohs said. “She ended up in foul trouble against Victor and sat out most of the third quarter, and she was fighting a cold Saturday, but Chelsea was able to step up with her offense in that game.”

Horner added six points and Chelsea Vohs five in the loss to Darby.

The Lady Devils had much more balanced scoring in the win over Victor. Vohs scored 14 to lead the Noxon win, Burgess added 13, Horner eight, Brown seven, Erwin five, Wood three and Murray two.

Bella Scichilone scored seven points to pace Victor.
