Fast breaks where the ball does not touch the floor are music to a basketball coach’s ears.

Making sweet music with several such fast breaks which ended up with the pumpkin stretching the strings of the net for easy shots, the Hot Springs Savage Heat strummed out an easy 68-16 win over Victor in Hot Springs Saturday.

Coach Richard Jackson was duly impressed with his 3-0 Savage Heat girls for the way they turned fast break opportunities into easy baskets, with no dribbling in between passes.

“Rebound, outlet pass, pass, pass, score…” he said. “You know you are playing good basketball when you can go end-to-end on the break with just passes, when the ball doesn’t hit the floor, and that’s how we were playing against Victor.”

Playing fast and playing fun, the Heat put all 10 players in the scoring column versus the Lady Pirates. Also playing shutdown defense, the Heat shut out Victor 23-0 in the first quarter and again 12-0 in the fourth.

Katelyn Christensen led the fast break fun with 18 points, McKennzie Cannon chipped in with 15 points and 12 rebounds, floor general Sydney Jackson was good for nine points, seven assists and six steals, and Brianna Gray, Irene Martin and Sage Jackson added five points apiece. Sage Jackson also secured eight rebounds.

Lily Winn added four points for the Savage Heat ladies, Lizzy Fisher three and Danielle Graham and Emma Rae Rasmussen two each.

Bella Scichilone led Victor with 10 points.

The Savage Heat have only one game this week but it is a biggie against one of the other best teams in the Western C this season, the Seeley-Swan Black Hawks Friday night in the Spa City. Seeley defeated Plains, and the Trotters are regarded as one of the better teams in 14C, 48-16 in Plains last week (see other story).

“We look forward to this game,” Jackson said, “Seeley is one of the better teams in District 12C. We plan on getting after them with a little pressure and see how they respond to us.”
