Heat boys find winning formula

January 30, 2020

O + D = W.

That’s age-old, coach-speak for a simple formula for success that has worked forever in all sports. You put some O (offense) together with good D (defense) and you can get the W (the win).

Hot Springs boys basketball coach Scott Fredrickson and his Savage Heat are sticking with that basic plan, and moved to two more wins last week using it, holding off Two Eagle River 79-67 in Pablo Thursday and returning to Hot Springs Friday and defeating Troy 67-49.

All in on offense, defense and winning some more, the Savage Heat play Valley Christian in Missoula Friday in their only action this week.

“Valley is a well-coached team and we look forward to the challenge of playing on the road,” Fredrickson said. “The kids will be ready to play.”

The Heat got into a shootout of sorts in Pablo Thursday. Good thing they have one of the hottest hired guns in District 14C working for them as the high-scoring Brandon Knudsen went off for 36 points in leading Hot Springs to the win.

Knudsen’s mighty fine day included four 3-pointers and could have been in the 40-point range had he shot better at the free throw line, where he connected on only six of 12 attempts.

Knudsen was again nominated for western Montana player of the week honors based on his outstanding performances last week.

Kyle Lawson added 14 points to the Heat’s winning total, Luke Waterbury threw down 13, Jack McAllister 10, Lincoln Slonaker six and Nathan Lawhead two.

Michael Brown led Two Eagle with 22 points, Sheadyn Craft added 17 and Anthony Charlo 13.

Against Troy, Knudsen again led the way with 30 points this time, McAllister added 12, Lawson 11, Slonaker six, Lawhead four and Waterbury and eighth-grader Quincy Styles-DePoe two apiece.

Morley Eb led Troy with 17 points and Ricki Fisher scored 10 for the Trojans.
