ON THE MOVE - Noxon freshman Avery Burgess dribbles as St. Regis' Karmen Alexander defends.

All said and done, the Noxon Lady Red Devils ended up having a pretty good basketball season in their first campaign under new head coach Cortney Vohs.

The very young Lady Devils showed well in last week's District 14C tournament in Ronan, defeating St. Regis 42-35 in the first round Thursday, falling 51-18 to eventual champion Charlo in the semifinals Friday, coming back to trip up Two Eagle River 48-34 in loser-out play Saturday morning, and finally, falling 57-43 to Plains in the 14C consolation game that night.

Vohs was impressed with how her girls played last week, particularly against Plains, a team that had defeated Noxon 52-9 on the last weekend of the regular season.

"I was quite happy with how the girls played," she said. "They made me really proud on how they performed in Ronan last week and all season long really. I think we surprised some people and should have a very bright future with everybody we have coming back next year."

Playing with no seniors on their roster this season, the Devils relied heavily on their underclassmen all season and the 14C tourney was no exception.

Against St. Regis, Avery Burgess led the Lady Devils with 20 points, Vanessa Horner chipped in with six, Aubrey Erwin five, Emily Brown four, Jaedyn Murray three and Izzy Lampshire and Riley Richter two each.

Displaying Noxon's youth, Burgess, Brown and Erwin are all freshmen, Horner, Richter and Murray sophomores and Lampshire a junior.

Sunny Shoupe led St. Regis with 13 points and Macy Hill scored 11 for the Lady Tigers.

Back on court against Charlo Friday, the Devils stayed close for a while but eventually fell back to the defeat. "Charlo is so tough," Vohs said, "and very quick on their feet. They got the lead and we weren't able to get back in it."

Burgess scored 11 points to lead Noxon, Erwin added three and Brown and Richter two apiece.

In loser out play against Two Eagle River Saturday, Burgess scored 23 points, Brown eight, Richter five, Horner four, Erwin three, Murray two and Lampshire, Mia Vogel and Amari Printz-Hay one each.

In a further demonstration of how young the Lady Devils really are, Vogel and Printz-Hay are actually eighth graders.

GOING IN FOR 2 - Noxon freshman Emily Brown in action against St. Regis in Ronan Thursday.

Sarah Gardipee led Two Eagle River with 12 points and Ce'Alana Shepherd added 10.

Against Plains in the consolation game, Burgess scored 21 points, Horner eight, Brown six, Murray and Vohs three apiece and Richter two.

Vohs was heartened by the efforts of her girls against Plains, especially after losing to them so convincingly only a week earlier. "We played so much better, that was great to see," Vohs said. "I knew we were a better team than we showed in Plains the last week of the regular season."
