Elks event focuses on babies

The Elks Lodge in Thompson Falls will be hosting a community baby shower on Saturday, March 14 from noon to 2 p.m. This event is catered to everyone in Sanders County who is expecting, or has newborns, infants, or babies. The baby shower is sponsored by the Elks National Foundation (ENF) through the Spotlight Grant, one of the newest grants offered through ENF, which debuted this last year. “The grant focuses on family literacy,” said Michelle Blackstone, the lodge’s exalted ruler.

The baby shower, health fair and book fair will be full of fun activities for expecting mothers and children. Activities include balloon animals, kid’s craft time, face painting and story time, along with free children’s books and refreshments, all provided by the Elks through the Spotlight Grant.

This event is by invitation only and is designed to “help out anyone who might benefit from a little extra help no matter what their financial situation is.” According to Blackstone, there have been around 18 invitations handed out so far. While there isn’t a cap on the number of invitations that will be handed out, Blackstone is encouraging anyone expecting and with children up to 18 months to contact her for an invitation.

Baby shower gifts will be given out to anyone meeting the above criteria, up until the gifts run out. In those gifts, attendees will be given diapers, formula, wipes, burp clothes, baby hygiene products, bottles, onesies, and other items. There will also be a raffle for some “bigger ticket items,” according to Blackstone.

Representatives from Sanders County Public Health, Sanders County Coalition for Families, Clark Fork Valley Hospital and the Thompson Falls Public Library will be at the event to provide families with information on health, nutrition and car seat safety.

Donations are being accepted for new items such as diapers, wipes, formula, bottles, burp clothes, blankets and any other newborn items. They are also looking for donated new or gently used children’s books. All donations can be dropped off at the Elks and the Sanders County Courthouse.

If you would like to attend the baby shower, please all or text (406) 546-6559 and leave a message with your name, address, phone number, age of all children and item(s) that would be most beneficial for your family.
