Harriet Tubman, Pocahontas, the Grimke sisters and Sacajawea, to name a few, came to life in Thompson Falls earlier this month when sixth grade students selected a historical figure, researched it and dressed in costume becoming that person for one hour.

"It is a great way to show off what kids have learned," said teacher Jessica Lewis about the wax museum project. Prior to depicting their figure, students spent a month researching a historically significant person of their choosing, from early America to the Civil War.

Dressed in their best costume flair, parents and fellow Thompson Falls students were invited to visit the "museum" and learn more about the important social role each figure played in American history. According to Lewis, who teaches sixth grade with Jennifer Bowden, the students were a little nervous about participating in the wax museum, but their nerves quickly settled within minutes after becoming their characters.

In addition to history, the wax museum project integrates lessons in reading, writing and art into one project, making it a significantly beneficial program that Lewis hopes to see continue in the future. She added that the school she taught at prior to Thompson Falls participated in the event and she felt it would benefit Thompson Falls students.
