The Thompson Falls School Board met Monday to discuss several subjects, including monetary issues facing the district. One expensive challenge being faced is connecting to the new sewer system, which is expected to cost the school district thousands per year.

As the district looks for ways to save, the School Resource Officer (SRO) position will remain vacant when current SRO Bob Thornhill fulfills his desire to retire. The SRO’s main job is to connect with kids and bridge law enforcement and the community, as stated by Thornhill. The SRO also organizes anti-drug and alcohol abuse programs, such as Red Ribbon Week. He is also in charge of implementing emergency drills (including active shooter scenarios), which he believes should be up to date for the next couple of years.

Another topic on the agenda was the approval of the new high school principal’s contract. Dan Schrock, the prospective principal, is expected to sign a contract with a $80,000 salary. The board stated that the increase in pay is meant to make the position more competitive with state-wide principal pay. They also shared the average pay statewide hovers around $80-$85,000, so Thompson Falls is still coming in at the low end of the spectrum.
