Personal connection vital to communication

We’ve never been in a situation like this. We’ve never had so many meetings over videoconference. Most of us had never heard of Zoom before COVID-19 forced us to stay home and learn to adapt to doing more things from home.

It’s amazing the things that can get accomplished, but that personal connection is definitely missing. The lack of emotion (even with those annoying emojis) and the lack of connection with texting and social media used to drive us crazy. Now, it’s the fact that our ability to look people in the eyes when we make decisions or convey a point that is inhibiting us. Kids and employees are struggling for bandwidth to talk to their teachers, stream meetings or upload important documents.

Good communication is adapting to these unusual times. It’s easy to turn off the computer or devices and go back to your lives, without realizing the impact of something you did or said through text or call. But words and actions have an impact, especially when you aren’t in a face-to-face situation and can see someone’s facial expressions or body language.

We will one day share stories about that time a virus forced us to homeschool our kids, work from home and leave things on the porch instead of going in our parents’ and friends’ homes. Our hope is that we also share how our communities have grown and advanced from this experience, and that the personal connection we’ve been missing so much comes back stronger.
