Turnout high for county primary

More than 65% of Sanders County's registered voters turned in ballots for the state's all-mail primary, with results coming in late Tuesday. The Sanders County Elections Office issues 7,735 ballots and 5,075 were processed by elections staff Tuesday evening. By comparison, in the last presidential primary in 2016, 47.73% of voters cast ballots.

In local races, Democrat Diane Magone will move on to face Republican Bob Brown in the race for State Senate, District 7. Magone receive 930 primary votes and Gerald Cuvillier received 168 on the Democratic ticket.

County Commissioner Tony Cox is being challenged for his seat by Christopher Stough. While both men will be on the November ballot, Cox received 2,886 votes on Tuesday and Stough received 1,620.

Current state senator Jennifer Fielder is running for Public Service Commissioner in District 4. While Fielder received 2,484 in her resident county of Sanders, statewide results were not available at press time.

Sanders County Election Administrator Nichol Scribner was pleased with the efficiency and accuracy in which the ballots were counted Tuesday night, but noted that 52 ballots were rejected. Ballots are rejected for various reasons, including if a ballot envelope contains ballots voted for more than one party.
