The annual walk to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s will look a little different this year. On Sunday, residents will gather at the Power Park Pavilion as people around the country gather to raise awareness of the disease.

Jodie Bittinger, a speech language pathologist from Thompson Falls who specializes in geriatrics, coordinates a monthly Alzheimer’s and dementia support group. The group meets the second Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Oddfellows meeting room behind the barber shop in Thompson Falls.

“Every family will or has been affected by Alzheimer’s,” Bittinger said. “It’s much easier to get through it when you have someone to lean on and help you understand what’s going on.” Bittinger is coordinating this year’s local Walk to End Alzheimer’s as a “Walk Your Neighborhood” event. She will be at the Power Park 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, with information and resources. She said she has created a lending library with reference materials, books and other information available to Sanders County residents.

Bittinger encourages everyone to come to Power Park to help raise awareness and take a walk to show their support. Donations for the American Alzheimer’s Association will also be accepted. Bittinger said one person has pledged to donate a certain amount of money for each high school cross country athlete who comes to the event.

Bittinger asked that participants wear masks at the event and people will be asked to social distance. The American Alzheimer’s Association has chosen purple as their signature color and participants are encouraged to wear purple.
