DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE Kathleen Williams (right), who is running for Montana's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, talks to supporters in Thompson Falls on Monday.

With the General Election less than a month away, candidates are hitting the trails of Montana to connect with voters.

On Monday, Kathleen Williams, a Democrat from Bozeman, made a stop in Thompson Falls as part of her 26-town Solutions Tour of Montana. Williams is running for Montana's lone seat in the House of Representatives. Matt Rosendale, the state's Republican auditor, is also competing for the seat.

This will be the former three-term state legislator's second bid to represent Montana in the U.S. House. Supporters gathered at Power Park in Thompson Falls to meet and talk with the potential representative.

"I have the ability to get there and go to work," Williams said to the crowd. "I want to go and serve and solve problems."

Williams outlined three main priorities the people of Montana have asked her to fulfill. First on that list is health care.

"We have a patchwork of a health care system," Williams stated. "Everyone deserves health care, no matter where they live." Fostering opportunities and building a stronger economy on the other side of this pandemic was the next priority Williams spoke about. She also talked about protecting the state's outdoor heritage. She spoke of her four--decade career in working in natural resources and her love for Montana.

Williams touched on the contrast between herself and Rosendale, noting she is not running to climb the political ladder, but will be going to the U.S. House to serve the people of Montana.

"We are between 1 and 3 points ahead in the polls, but it's going to be a nail biter until the end," Williams stated. She also encouraged people to get out there and have a conversation; a conversation with your neighbor, your family, or a friend regardless of political affiliation.

Nearly a century ago, Montanan Jeanette Rankin was the first woman in the country's history to serve in Congress. Should she be elected, Williams would become just the second woman to represent Montana in Congress. When asked about the significance this historical moment has played in her campaign, Williams said she was honored and hopes to become an inspiration for future generations of women who want to run for any political office.

"I want to be elected because I'm the best candidate, but it's an incredible honor. The legend of Jeanette Rankin is one that I was told about 26 years ago, and I found it very inspiring that Montana elected the first woman to any national legislative body in the entire world," Williams stated.

While Williams admires many of Rankin's political characteristics, her commitment, her strength, her stick-to-itiveness, "I want to win to provide a true independent voice for Montanans, and the fact that I would be the second woman, it's an honor, especially when people bring their daughter's to events like this, because they want to them to see that woman can do this too." Williams continued, "if I can be an inspiration to the next generation of young girls and women to run for office, then that's great."
