One-third of ballots turned in

October 22, 2020

More than a third of Sanders County voters have cast their ballots with less than two weeks to go before the Nov. 3 general election. County Election Administrator Nichol Scribner said that 2,773 ballots had been accepted as of Tuesday afternoon. She also noted that more than 200 new Sanders County voters have come into the office to register to vote or re-activate their status as a voter.

Ballots have been dropped off at the drop box outside the courthouse, voted in-person at the courthouse and received through the mail. Scribner said that people are driving in from all over the county to drop their ballots off. She noted that drop box sites in each community will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Oct. 22. A full list of drop box sites and times is available online at http://www.co.sanders.mt.us.

Scribner said that there have been questions about dots on ballots. “The only way it will interfere is if it’s near the oval” to cast a vote, she said. “If you notice it, call right away and we’ll replace the ballot.”

Sander County has issued 8,430 ballots. As they are returned, ballots are accepted by the county and prepped for counting, with election judges reconciling numbers as each step of the process. Ballot prepping will begin as early as next Thursday, October 29.

Voters can drop ballots off at drop boxes throughout the county until 8 p.m. on Election Day, or vote in-person at the courthouse until polls close at 8 p.m. on November 3. Per Gov. Steve Bullock’s order, the county has affixed prepaid postage to ballot return envelopes, so voters do not need to apply any postage. “We want to make it as easy as we can for people to vote,” Scribner noted.

Also this week, the county prepared and mailed property tax bills. Scribner reminded property owners to watch their mail for the new tax bills for the first half of 2020 real property and second half of 2020 for mobile home taxes. The payments are due November 30 and can be mailed, dropped at the courthouse drop box, or, Scribner said tax bills can be viewed and paid online. If a receipt is needed for a payment that is mailed or dropped off, Scribner said the taxpayer should put a note in with a payment. Receipts are not automatically sent for tax payments. Scribner reminds residents that visitors to the courthouse are being screened for COVID-19 symptoms and masks are required to enter the building.
