Hobbled Hawks win 2 of 3

January 28, 2021

Without a few of their best players, the Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys still have the goods to compete with anyone.

Proving that fact, the Hawks won two of three games last week, topping Stillwater Christian 50-48 in Kalispell Tuesday, falling to Mission 58-49 in Thompson Falls Thursday and bouncing back to defeat Seeley-Swan 62-26 in Seeley Lake Saturday.

Hoping to have everyone back soon – Dante Micheli missed all three games, Nathan Schraeder was out for the Mission and Seeley games, and Justin Morgan was sidelined earlier this week, all for COVID-19 protocols – coach Jake Mickelson will guide the 5-1 Hawks into home games with Troy Friday and Anaconda Saturday.

Mickelson thinks Schraeder and Morgan will be good to go for Friday’s game but Micheli isn’t expected back until next week.

Mickelson was happy with how his depleted roster performed last week, in spite of the District 7B conference loss to Mission. The Hawks had defeated the Bulldogs in Mission earlier this month when their roster was full.

“We were down a couple horses but still battled hard and had our chances in that game,” he said. “Without Dante and Nathan in there some of our other kids stepped up.”

No Hawk has stepped up more lately than Kade Pardee, who Mickelson described as a “double-double machine.” Providing the raw data to back that claim, Pardee scored 15 points and scoured the boards for 14 rebounds against Mission.

Morgan led Thompson Falls scoring in that game with 18 points (including 4 of 5 shooting from 3-point land), Tristan Subatch added eight points, Cody Burk six and Roman Sparks two.

Pardee, Subatch, Sparks and Morgan had three assists each, Subatch also grabbed three steals and blocked two shots, and Sparks and Morgan pilfered two steals apiece.

Mission scoring was not available.

The Hawks outscored Stillwater Christian 9-2 in the closing minutes to pull out that road win earlier last week.

Pardee and Burk scored 15 points each to lead the Hawks, Subatch scored eight, Morgan seven, Schraeder three and Sparks two. Stillwater scoring was not available.

The Blue Hawks were never threatened in their game with the Blackhawks in Seeley Lake, building a 14-7 lead after one quarter and extending that advantage to 29-13 by halftime.

Pardee threw down 25 points to lead Thompson Falls, Burk added nine, Subatch and Jesse Claridge eight apiece, Morgan six, Breck Ferris four. and Josh Wilhite two. Pardee also contributed seven

rebounds and a team-high seven assists, Morgan dished out six assists and grabbed and four steals, Claridge cleared 10 rebounds and had four steals, and Subatch added five steals.

Sawyer Shelmerdine scored 12 points for Seeley-Swan and Jason James six.
