Horsemen head to 14C tourney

What better time than now to get over that proverbial hump?

Coach Tyrel Allen and his Plains Horsemen dropped a pair of games last week, falling 72-32 to St. Regis in Plains Thursday before having a shot at tying up the game late before losing 40-37 in Hot Springs Friday.

The No. 5 seed in the remote District 14C tournament being played this week, the Horsemen were set to play at No. 4 Charlo Tuesday in the first round of the tourney but results were not available at press time.

Allen says his Horsemen have been playing a lot of teams close lately, like they did with Hot Springs, he is just waiting for them to punch through with a win or two in such situations. “We have to get over the hump and win some games like these,” he said, “to believe that we can.”

With only seconds remaining in the game with Hot Springs and trailing by three points, the Horsemen got the ball back, called a timeout and set up a play; but the shot fell off to the side enabling the hometown Heat to hold on and win.

Gabe Gamboa hit four of seven 3-point attempts and scored 12 points to lead Plains in Hot Springs, Parker Flock added nine points, Gunner Gannarelli five, Garth Parker four, Gavin Regalado and Nathan Feliksa two apiece and Duncan Chisholm one. Parker pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Against St. Regis, Feliksa and Flock counted eight points each to lead Plains, Regalado and Gamboa scored five apiece, Jayden Weeks three, Parker two and Chisholm one.

Caleb Ball led St. Regis with 28 points, Tanner Day added 18, John Pruitt 11, Andrew Stanford 10 and Adam Ball seven.
