VanVleet qualifes for State C

Cade VanVleet is making up for lost time.

Not just time lost to COVID-19 either. He is making up for lost time due to a devastating injury suffered early in his sophomore season on the football field which cost him all of the 2019-2020 basketball season and last spring’s track and field campaign as well, with or without the advent of the pandemic.

Wasting no time this spring, VanVleet, who is now nearing the end of his junior year, has already pre-qualified for the May 27-29 State C meet in Missoula in the shot put and discus based on his marks from the Eureka Time Trials March 27.

Cade put the shot 45 feet, .75 inches, and threw the discus 141-4 in Eureka to punch his ticket to Missoula. Proving that his legs are also back up to snuff, VanVleet ran a 12.88 second 100 meter dash (good for second place overall) in the Time Trials for good measure.

“We were all quite surprised to see Cade qualify so early in the season,” Noxon coach Matt Havens said in an email earlier this week. “All the kids that went (to Eureka) did well for the first meet of the year – we are proud of all of them.”

Hoping to pre-qualify more athletes for the State C meet, Havens said that the Red Devil thinclads will not return to action until after spring break at the Thompson Falls Invitational April 15.

Noxon teams were invited to the Dave Tripp Memorial meet hosted by Hot Springs in Polson Friday (see other story) but NHS officials say the Red Devils will attend that meet as it is coming during the school’s spring break
